BIAL plans to create a mini-city centered around the Kempegowda airport to let visitors indulge in leisure as well as work during transit

An Airport City on the lines of the one at New Delhi, which will have hotels, restaurants business parks, shopping malls and other amenities, has been planned near the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

As of 2016, Kempegowda Airport is the third busiest airport by passenger traffic in the country, behind the airports in Delhi and Mumbai and is the 35th busiest airport in Asia. It handled over 22.2 million passengers in 2016 with little less than 500 aircraft movements a day. The airport also handled about 314,060 tonnes (346,190 short tons) of cargo,  attracting a mix of long-haul, high-yield international passengers. It is this that has prompted the airport authorities (Bangalore International Airport Ltd) to plan the Aerotropolis. ( Airport city Bangalore )

“Envisaging a seamless expansion in size and capacity of the airport facilities over the next 10 years, based on the passenger and cargo growth, the airport is ambitiously being developed as an Aerotropolis, which means an airport city where layout, infrastructure and economy are centred on a major airport. BIAL aims to be the engine of economic growth for the region by connecting Bengaluru to the world and evolving into a Central Business District (CBD),”

The idea behind conceptualizing an Airport City Bangalore is to enable passengers and visitors to indulge in leisure and business without having to leave the airport premises during transit.

“Airport City Bangalore is a city within a city, a destination in itself. Airport City will be much more than an airport. Apart from catching flights, Airport City is envisioned to be an urban entity with a business park, prime offices, hotels, conference centres, shopping complexes, restaurants and entertainment zones,” officials said.

BIAL plans to make it a destination, a centre of aviation and non-aviation business and the nucleus of commercial development in North Bengaluru.

The Aero City in New Delhi  spread over 45 acres has several commercial establishments, including about 2,000 hotels.
